I'm not sure why I bought this book. I'd been swept along with the country's fascination in the most strained love story to hit the headlines for many years. If it hadn't have been for Jill Morrell's desperate attempts to keep people focussed on her boyfriend's situation, I doubt that his or Brian Keenan's name would be as well known as they are now, or indeed whether they would even be alive. As it was, we got to see Jill's campaigns, felt for her and in the tradition of all good romantic tales, prayed that she would marry her prince charming when he was free. Some other Rainbow - the story of the capture of John McCarthy and the endeavours made by Jill Morrell to ensure his release. The book begins with John and Jill's blossoming friendship and some background details regarding both their careers. It is the normal everyday tale of a friendship blossoming into a love story until the day that John is sent on an assignment to Beirut during the troubles there. He is about to return home and indeed is on his way, when he is captured en route to the airport and taken hostage. I was going through a personal crisis of my own when I purchased and started to read this book. It was January 1993 when on my way to a convention that we had to brake behind a B.T. van that was blocking some of the main road we were travelling on. The person driving me decided to ease slowly round the van ,I remember saying this is dangerous ,then came a screech of brakes behind us ,timed seemed to slow down for me as a large car started to walzt towards us a few seconds later the car screeching down the road sideways 60miles an hour hit us in the back at the same time .
