Advantages: gives hope to people that have to suffer.
Disadvantages: none
I was going through a personal crisis of my own when I purchased and started to read this book. It was January 1993 when on my way to a convention that we had to brake behind a B.T. van that was blocking some of the main road we were travelling on. The person driving me decided to ease slowly round the van ,I remember saying this is dangerous ,then came a screech of brakes behind us ,timed seemed to slow down for me as a large car started to walzt towards us a few seconds later the car screeching down the road sideways 60miles an hour hit us in the back at the same time . I expected to die . The aftermath of that accident was whiplash of the spine and neck ,but worst of all what proved to be later diagnosed Post Traumatic Stress , from which I still suffer although degrees better . I have had several years counselling from a top Psychologist in my local hospital. What has this got to do with the book "Some other Rainbow"?For me a lot. I didnt Know what my strange symptoms were at the time ,and I thought seeing how John McCarthy coped with His severe stress, and his experience would help me. Severe stress it was for Him along with Brian Keenan,Frank Reed ,David Jacobson Sunnie Mann, Terry Waite,Terry Anderson, and Nick Tosvig ,and we must not forget those with Jill Morrell ,and others that waited and fought for their release. This book is written in the first person by John and then Jill. Yes as shown in this book their stressful experiences changed them ,affected them physically and mentally ,and emotionally. They didnt have much access to daylight all those 5 years ,some were tortured . They had amazing comraderie amongst them. The book gives an hour by hour description of how they coped. Sometimes their captors were friendly some times shot at the cell wall for
the hell of it.They all started off in solitary confinement , but could hear each other, they were blindfolded some of the time . When their captors decided to move them to another location their mouths were taped and they were rolled up in rugs blindfolded and shoved in the boot of a car . They suffered panic attacks because of this and flashbacks .They describe their feelings, This is an incredible book with would you belive even humorous moments. This is an account of deep human experience of people tested to and beyond their limit. There was a moving moment when John is led blindfolded down a ladder into a cell.when the blindfold is removed he sees Brian Keenan and hugs him ,Brian helps John with his tales ,and at times they tease one another Terry Waite joins them later. John says that Brian took him on mental voyages that compensated for no physical journeys. John has an unusual experience when in solitary confinement it gives Him strength to fight on . There is of course great joy for them when they are released at different times. Credit must go to Jill Morrell and those that helped Her not to give up . This book did help me and still does, and it shows what strengths can be drawn together when Humans help one another. You have to feel proud of their courage all of them.
