Advantages: Easy Read, Sweet Story
Disadvantages: Not as unpredictable as expected
I am a huge fan of Melissa Hill but as I am not allowing myself to buy any books I put Something from Tiffany's at the top of my Christmas list and luckily my sister in law kindly bought it for me. I received the paperback version of the book, which has a bright red cover with two gift wrapped bundles on the front which has obviously been designed to captivate the Christmas market!
The book is centred around two couples, Ethan and Vanessa & Gary and Rachel who are both enjoying a pre Christmas getaway to New York. Both men decide to get Christmas presents from Tiffany's -Widower Ethan gets Vanessa a diamond engagement ring , which he has been planning to purchase for a while, after first obtaining his daughter Daisy's permission to propose. Gary buys Rachel a silver charm bracelet, as he feels obliged to get her something nice as she paid for the trip, although he does not want to spend too much money - his trip to Tiffany's is more spontaneous having realised while shopping he has not yet got her a present!
As they are both leaving the store an accident causes the two bags to be swapped, causing surprising results for both couple when the gifts are opened. Gary decides not to look a gift horse in the mouth and half heartedly proposes to Rachel when she opens the ring, while Ethan does not say a word to Vanessa but plans to get the ring back. As this proves to be tougher than he first imagines could it be that fate has other plans for the ring...
Although I enjoyed Something from Tiffany's, I was left rather disappointed when comparing it to other books by Melissa Hill. I usually love the fact that her books have lots of twists and turns that I never see coming no matter how much I guess, but this was rather predictable which was a shame. I think the flaw lies with some of the characterisation - although you couldn't fail to root for Ethan and his sweet (but much too clever for an 8 year old) daughter, I didn't really warm to either of the female leads. Vanessa came across as too cold and Rachel a bit too needy when she was supposed to be this sassy business owner. I think coupled with the fact that the book was slightly too long for the plot, I started to lose interest as we approached the end.
I would still recommend this book, but I think it is more of a beach read than the expected darker chick lit usual written by the author. It is a nice easy read, and the third person narrative is well written so there is no confusion when the story flits between London and Ireland. Once I started reading I did not want to put the book down, as I wanted to see if I was right in what I thought was going to happen, and I had the book finished in 2 days. I would definitely read another book by Melissa Hill, but I hope she returns to her slightly darker style for her next book.
