Advantages: Fans of In The Night Garden will love singing along, adults can finally learn the proper words
Disadvantages: Children that don't watch In The Night Garden won't understand or be interested, there are no stories
The 'Songs and Rhymes from In The Night Garden' book was brought for my daughter as one of her (too) many christmas presents last year.
The book is quite big and is about half an inch thick. It is hardback which means it can take a good battering! We have a few scratches on our copy but they are not very noticable. The book can easily be wiped clean too. The pages are quite durable and easy for little fingers to turn. The book consists of 30 pages.
The book is blue, has quite a soft texture to it and has the book title written in sparkly writing. It has a nice big picture of Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy, Makka Pakka and The Tombliboos together on the front (there is also a similar picture on the back and written underneath 'This is the way to the garden in the night... Meet Igglepiggle and his friends as they take you on a magic journey of song and rhyme into the Night Garden').
The book starts and ends on the very first and very last page which is quite uncommon - usually books have a blank page or two before it actually starts and finishes.
As the title suggests the book is full of songs and rhymes from the hit childrens television programme 'In The Night Garden'. It has every song and rhyme that I can think of, including the introduction song ('The night is black and the stars are bright and the sea is dark and deep...'), the rhyme which is said when approaching a characters house ('Looking up, looking down, here and there and all about...'), Makka Pakkas song ('Makka Pakka akka wakka mikka makka moo...'), Igglepiggles song ('Yes - my name is Iggglepiggle, Igglepiggle-niggle-wiggle-diggle...'), Upsy Daisys song (Upsy Daisy here I come, I'm the only Upsy one...'), The Tombliboos song (Ombliboo Tombliboo knock on the door, Ombliboo Tombliboo sit on the floor...') and The Pontipines song ('The Pontipines are friends of mine...').
At the end of the book you get to say goodnight to all of the characters, just like in the televison programme.
The pages are also covered in lovely, bright pictures of all the favourite Night Garden characters - Upsy Daisy, Igglepiggle, Makka Pakka, The Tombliboos, the Ninky nonk, the Pinky ponk, The Pontipines, The Haahoos and The Titifers.
My daughter loves to sing along with the songs that she knows and loves. I can imagine that all 'In The Night Garden' fans would adore this book because of the catchy songs and colourful pictures. It's a true must have for any Night Garden fan. It's also a lovely, fun way to spend some quality time with your child and a great book for holding their attention until the end.
It has also worked out very useful for me as I could never seem to get any of those ridiculous lyrics properly! "Makka Pakka jicky picky wacky poo" is no more!
The downsides to this book are that it has no stories and literally is just songs and rhymes. It is also something that would not suit children that don't watch the show as most of the words and the general concept of the book would get totally lost on them, thus making it very uninteresting too. It isn't the most educational of books either!
The books RRP is £9.99 but you can get it considerably cheaper if you shop around.
Summary: Finally a way to learn those ridiculous lyrics.
