Advantages: Gives you a chance to read a classic book
Disadvantages: The plot and strange language
Sons and Lovers is a 'classic' novel from the much celebrated writer D H Lawrence. The story is apparently semi autobiographical and is set in early 20th century Nottinghamshire, England.
The book is about the Morel family, who live in a mining town where life revolves around the pit. The main character of the book is Paul Morel, but the first few chapters set the scene by detailing how his parents got together and their early family life, plus we learn about his elder brother William.
Once we get into the story properly we meet Paul in more detail and learn that he has a very close relationship with his mother. We also get to meet his two love interests, goody goody young Miriam and the more mature Clara. So just how do things pan out for Paul, his mother and his lovers...
I found some sections of the book hard to understand as they are written in old fashioned language with a North of England twang to it, but the notes at the back of the book help to translate some of the strange language.
This book will appeal to some people, but sadly I'm not one of those people. I found it quite hard work and didn't think that there was much of a plot to it.
