Sparkles - Louise Bagshawe
Advantages: Good characters, twists and turns that keep your attention.
Disadvantages: A bit too long.
Sophie Masot is beautiful, happily married to your gorgeous, powerful and uber rich husband Pierre massot. Owner of House Masot, one of Paris's most poweful jewellery houses., and proud mother to son Thomas. All is looking rosy until Sophie's wealthy husband Pierre disappears. Where to nobody seems to know, not his young son who was waiting for his papa to return, not his quiet wife Sophie or his overbearinly dovoted Maman, the elegant Katherine Massot.
Seven years on and Sophie decides that enough is enough. Tom is grown up, now 18 and off studying at Oxford University in England, while she sits in the ever more depressing Massot mansion with only her bitter mother in law for company.
Sophie decides it's time to declare Pierre officially dead, sure no-one could blame her? It had been 7 years and surely if he had still been alive someone would know about it!
The story follow Sophie's transformation from shy and mouselike wife of the powerful Monsieur Pierre Massot, to an elegant, professional and well respected business woman as she tries to save House Massot and her only son's inheritance from people who seek to destroy it all.
A novel packed full of luxury, sparkle, love, betrayal, affairs, murder, revenge and of course family loyalty. It spans the globe from France to America and Russia back to England, wherever there is sparkle there must also be scandal or so it seems.
Louise Bagshawe has done a fantastic job with Sparkles, she really brings the characters to life, and I really felt an empathy with main character Sophie, especially when there are times in the story when she seems to have noone to talk to that she can truly trust. Also in equal measure to the empathy I had for Sophie I also felt an anger against another of the high ranking characters Judy Dean, who seemingly has no regard to who she hurts in the hope of getting to the top, and screwing over those who she sees as having hurt her.
I found the twists and turns of the novel a change from most girly novels of it's kind, and I definately didn't see the ending coming. I enjoyed the layers of the characters, and how you find out more and more about them as the novel progresses and in some cases such as Tom Massot I found myself changing my opinion on him from thinking he was a spoilt little rich kid to actually hoping things worked out for him.
The one downside to this novel is it's size and I think that may put some readers off, as it is a bit of a tome with 599 pages packed full of a glitz and drama. Although the story is a good one, I believe it could possibly have been condensed by about 100 pages, where there are some sections that do not lend themselves entirely to the story.
