The second book sees the return of many favourite characters, a little more grown up, and a little more accepting of Torak's unusual skills, along with the welcome return of Torak's Wolf, who's fate had been uncertain up to this point. Following the success of Wolfbrother (also reviewed on this site), the first in Michelle Paver's series about a young boy in prehistoric Europe forced to quest to save the world he knows, Spirit Walker looked like it could easily follow on from the neat ending of the previous book. I wasn't let down. Spirit Walker is a good offering for a middle book, its story is nicely contained with a beginning, middle and end, which can often get lost or confused in the middle of a series, but Paver seems to be approaching each book as a sort of contained chapter in Torak's life.
