Splosh!

One of the books in the Kipper series, this will almost certainly appeal to very young children, featuring as it does the ever loveable Kipper, that walking, talking, umbrella carrying little chap!

I say umbrella carrying because we meet Kipper on the first page, holding his umbrella with the rain going "Splash!" on the aforementioned umbrella.

We are introduced therefore immediately to the format of the book. Each page starts with a sound...splash; splosh; flash; drip, drip, drip; hop squelch;a a a tishoo;slop slap. Great words, which children will easily give an action to. The sound words are in inverted commas, and are all followed by an exclamation mark, so a useful way to mention punctuation young children may not have encountered without having to over emphasise the point.

So, each double page spread has the text at one side with a delightful picture on the adjoining and opposite page. The picture complements the text, and children can tell their own story using the pictures and the text they either remember or can read. There is very little text on each page, so it does not become an onerous or overly long story.

The initial sound is followed by an action associated with the rain and the cold. Kipper jumps into puddles, the water slops under the umbrella, the rabbits hop and squelch and so on. The sounds are so easily identifiable with the action, that even very young children are able to match action and sound.

The illustrations are as with the other Kipper books, lovely. Kipper is sure to appeal to young children as are his very cute animal friends. We especially like the picture when the hedgehog sneezes, and he is flung into the air with the force of it whilst Kipper and pals look on. The expressions on the characters faces are readable, and children like to guess what they are thinking by looking at their expressions.

PRICE AND AVAILABILITY

This copy cost £3.99, but check out amazon for a potential bargain.

I have also noticed one of the fabric softeners (I think it's Fairy) are giving away one of the four books in the series if you send off a till receipt showing a purchase of Fairy. I have bought some and intend to collect the set.

OTHER BOOKS BY THE SAME AUTHOR

A prolific and well loved writer of children's picture books. The Kipper series is very popular and includes books such as:
Kipper
Honk!
Kipper's Toybox
Kipper's Book of Counting
Kipper's Book of Colours
Kipper's Snowy day
Kipper and Roly
Kipper's balloon

WHAT I THINK OF THE BOOK

A short story book which will appeal to very young children. They will quickly remnember which sound goes with which action, and before you know it, will be reading the book to you!

The pictures are lovely, and children who have met Kipper before will remember his friends, and may tell you other Kipper's stories. This sense of familiarity is important for young children, so should be encouraged.

There is very little text, and what there is is succinct and to the point- the book is about noises. Children will enjoy thinking of their own noises and actions and should be encouraged to add actions to the noises in the book. We have made our own noise books, based on the story, and the children thoroughly enjoyed being given the opportunity to "make up words".

A lovely little story, just the right size book for small hands to pick up. Great pictures and characters, and a simple storyline to encourage the independent telling of a familiar story.

Thanks for reading.

I like the illustrations with these, although my kids prefer Wibbly Pig to Kipper
