A good story for children starting nursery school (Spot Goes to School - Eric Hill)
Member Name: Attachedparent
Advantages: Portrays “school” as fun and enjoyable Disadvantages: None
We got this book out of the library a few weeks before my daughter started at playgroup, and we read it fairly frequently. She progressed from being very threatened at the idea of “school” to being quite excited about it. Spot is welcomed on his first day at school by a benevolent-looking Miss Bear, and fellow pupils Clare the tortoise, Steve the crocodile and Helen the hippo. The lift-the-flap illustrations help to put across a sense of “school” being fun – singing, dressing up, playing in the playground, listening to a story and painting pictures. When Miss Bear tells Spot it’s time to go home, he says “Oh no! Not yet!” and this is the one bit of the book that has really stuck in my daughter’s mind – she still repeats it if she's disturbed in the middle of an enjoyable activity! My daughter’s introduction to playgroup was a lot smoother than I feared it would be and I’m quite convinced it was partly thanks to this book. Summary: |
