Spot Goes To The Farm - by Eric Hill

Everyone must surely be aware of the Spot books Eric Hill first created Spot back in 1980 and the cute dog character has been a firm favourite for pre-school children ever since. I have fond memories of my childhood when these books were pride of place on my bookshelf and today they are pride of place on Jack book shelf.

Spot is a cute, chubby and friendly dog that gets up to all sorts of mischief. In this book I am reviewing Spot takes a trip to the farm. This particular book I have is a board book but the same book is available in hardcover with paper pages or indeed soft paper cover with paper pages. The book still costs the same though and that price is £4.99 pence. These books are widely available in every bookstore or they can be found easily online at places such as Amazon or eBay.

The story is pretty simple and it begins with Spot and his Dad at the farm and his Dad says that he has some baby animals to show to Spot and Spot wants to find them himself. Each page you turn you see Spot looking in different places to try and find the baby animals. He looks in the barn and you have to lift the flap to see that he doesn't find baby animals but instead a large cow. The next page you have to lift the flap of the stable door to see a horse but no baby animals. The book carries along with this theme, each page you lift a flap to reveal a different animal in a different area of the farm, until finally you get to the last two pages which is where you find some piglets hiding behind a fence and then the very last page Spot also finds some kittens hidden in the washing basket!

The pictures are beautifully illustrated with bright bold colours and easy to see animals. It is good for young children because it teaches them which animals are which and because each animal has a sound bubble coming from them you are able to see what noise that animal makes as well.

The flaps on each page are not that strong and Jack has now got into the habit of trying to tear the flaps off the pages. I have to really watch him when he goes for these sorts of books as the flaps can be torn off easily. However Jack does really enjoy the Spot books and especially this one as he is very keen on all the different sorts of animals and loves it when I make the noises.

The bright pictures keep him interested and that fact that he can lift the flaps himself makes him feel really involved with the book when I am reading the words. The print is big and bold so easy to read and there are only a few words which I think is really all that is needed.

I would highly recommend buying these books if you have small children. They are hard wearing if you get the board book versions and I am sure they are a timeless classic that will be loved by young children for many years to come. The price is very reasonable for such a good book and you can pick them up for a lot cheaper if you get them from boot sales or indeed the Internet.

10/10 for Eric hill and his wonderful book Spot on The farm.

I hope this has been interesting. Thanks for taking the time to read.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Summary: a great book for young children
