Advantages: A great lift-the-flap book for pre-school children.

Disadvantages: None

Although I realise that Easter has been and gone this year, it's well worth keeping this book in mind for the build up to Easter 2008!

~ Spot's First Easter ~

Spot and his friend, Helen the hippo go on an Easter egg hunt that Sally, Spot's Mum has said the Easter Bunny has hidden.

They ask how many eggs have been hidden and the Easter Bunny, hiding behind a lift-the-flap bush says "Shh! Six". Instantly the reader knows more than Spot and Helen.

And so they go on a hunt, looking under flowerpots, behind sacks, under the stairs.

I particularly like this book as there isn't an egg in each place that the pair look.

Finally they find all 6 eggs and they save one for Sally!

~ Style and Content ~

As with most Spot books this has an extremely simple story line which is appropriate to the age group it is aimed at, from approx 18 months to 3 / 4 years old.

The lift-the-flap concept is really popular with young children as it gets them involved in the story.

The use of speech bubbles is good. Under all of the flaps either Spot or another animals are saying something.

The text is very limited so the book is also good for emergent readers.

~ Illustrations ~

As in all Spot books, the illustrations are set against a white backdrop.

The drawings are very simple and the use of rich, vibrant colours appeals to pre-school children.

~ Educational Values ~

As with most Eric Hill, Spot books, this book is a great educational tool:

* It develops fine motor skills with the lift-the-flap opportunities.
* It encourages an inquisitive nature and a love of books through the interaction and the bright, bold illustrations.
* This book develops early mathematical counting skills.
* It's great for emergent readers as the text is simple.
* It develops children's positional vocabulary and understanding by using words such as under, behind and inside.

~ Eric Hill and Spot ~

Spot was created in 1980 and he hasn't aged a bit, if only us humans aged so well!!
Following the huge success of 'Where's Spot', Eric Hill has continued to write a series of books all about Spot and his adventures, all of which are very relevant to children:

* Spot's first walk
* Spot's walk in the woods
* Spot visits his grandparents
* Spot goes to the farm
* Spot's touch and feel day

To name but a few!

Spot has an official website where games etc can be downloaded, www.funwithspot.com

There is also an animated series of Spot and a number of educational videos available.

~ Price ~

I have the boardbook version of this, ISBN: 0-7232-4950-4 which was £4.99. This is particularly good for very young children as there is no chance of them accidentally ripping the pages!

www.amazon.co.uk have the following bargains available.
All prices are for used and new books:
* paperbacks. boardbooks & hardcovers all start from the very, very, very low price of 1p!!

A real must-have book for anyone with young children!

Summary: An educational book which is fun for young children.

I so love little Spot, more so as a cartoon than the book although it is true, the books are very colourful and glossy.
