Ever since reading 'Gorky Park' by the same author some years ago, I have had a bit of a soft spot for his great detective hero, Arkady Renko. This is the latest instalment in his adventures in, what is now, post-Soviet Russia. Unlike many authors who get a bestseller and then try and churn out as many similar novels as possible, Martin Cruz Smith consistently provides a very entertaining read and a well constructed thriller. This one is no exception to any other. Detective Renko is a policeman in Moscow surrounded by corruption, incompetence and worse.
