Stalker by Faye Kellerman

Most of Faye Kellerman’s books feature Peter Decker, a Jewish detective in the LAPD. Stalker, the most recent of the series, takes the slightly different viewpoint of his daughter Cindy Decker. Newly out of the police academy we follow her as she tries to gain the respect of her colleagues in her own right, not an easy job since her father has risen to Lieutenant in the next district with a reputation that is hard to live up to.

After a series of car jackings Cindy becomes involved in her father’s investigation having known a victim who was killed. Soon strange things start happening, a photo moved in her apartment, a sticky note in her car, things she explains away. When more sinister things start to appear she is reluctant to ask her father for help, determined to prove her independence. As the story unfolds the tension mounts, you are there with her, looking over her shoulder, scrutinising every person around her as the suspicion falls on all around her, even fellow police officers.

All of the Decker series are good; I like the way the Jewish religion is brought into the stories giving you an insight into their traditions and beliefs. With the continuity of the characters through the series you feel as if you know them well which makes the plot a little more interesting, trying to guess what is in their mind. Faye Kellerman has a way of bringing you into the story, making you feel you are with the characters every step of the way. I always find that I want to finish the book by the time I am halfway through, needing to read just one more chapter before I go to sleep.
