Rating:

in his adventures in, what is now, post-Soviet Russia. Unlike many authors who get a bestseller and then try and churn out as many similar novels as possible, Martin Cruz Smith consistently provides a very entertaining read and a well constructed thriller. This one is no exception to any other. Detective Renko is a policeman in Moscow surrounded by corruption, incompetence and worse. Despite this, he refused to compromise and goes about his job in a professional manner. He is given the case of investigating the supposed appearance of Stalin on the platform of a Moscow underground station. He soon finds himself on dangerous ground with his life under threat and with ...

an innocent young girl..... Having never read Gorky Park but having seen the movie many years ago, you would think that, as a newcomer to the work of Martin Cruz Smith, this reader might be at a disadvantage but one of the things I liked best about this novel is that you don t have to have read Gorky Park to enjoy it! There are plenty of flash-back scenes that fill in the gaps between novels and this works also to help enlighten the reader who is new to Renko s world. Like the more recent Child 44, the novel is set during the Communist cold war, though much later than Child 44, and tensions between the East and West are both evident and extremely high. As a joint ...

an engrossing read and one that fully held my attention. The main character Arkady is quite unique in the way he is portrayed. A reluctant investigator the author Martin Cruz Smith does an excellent job of developing a complicated character who while obsessed with discovering the truth is awful very fearful about his own vulnerability yet despite the fact that he continually puts himself in perilous positions he is unable to curb his drive as an investigator to seek the truth. Arkady past is often hinted at and a couple of flash backs fill in the details but there is still a certain greyness about the events that resulted in him leading a life effectively on the run ...
