I came to 'A Star Called Henry' after I had eagerly devoured everything else Roddy Doyle had written. At the time I was overjoyed to see the book listed as the first part in a series (woohoo) and sat down to read with as much excitement as a child on Christmas Eve. The novel is set in the political troubles following the 1916 Easter Uprising in Ireland, and charts the adventures of (fictional) Henry Smart from childhood to his early 20s. I know very little about Irish politics, but Henry gets mixed up in the IRA and the Irish Citizens Army, rubbing shoulders with people like Michael Collins along the way. I have had this book on my shelf for a while and at last I have found time to read it. Its worth getting, a fantastic journey into dublin at the time of the Easter uprising of 1916 ithas all the elements of good story its funny, sad, love, real theatre. Yer man Henry smart is a rebel fenian killer who is one of Micheal collins boys he is an assassin like his father who killed people with his wooden leg as a weapon. The book reads like a family history and there is tension on every page as you just have to find out what happens next. It brings Irish history to life with feeling that you are actually there witnessing what happens to this young man. Even at ... Read the complete review

It is now among my favourites on the shelf... The main character, Henry, struggles throughout his childhood with a professional thug (doorman for a brothel) for a father and an alcoholic mother. Although his parents clearly dote on their sons, they obviously find life a real struggle amidst the poverty which surrounds them every day. The story develops with Henry caring for his younger brother and he himself basically having to stand on his own two feet from an early age. His ... Read the complete review
