Mention Star Trek to most people and they will release a groan. However, push them a little further and the chances are that they do know at least something about one of the most successful TV and film franchises of all time. They many only know about the original series and the chances are that they may only be able to name one or two characters. These characters are most likely to be Captain Kirk and his Science Officer Spock. Kirk and Spock have transcended the science fiction stable that housed them to become cult heroes in everyday media.
