Before reading this I had only read 'I Was Dora Suarez', a classic noir novel of the darkest kind. This was very different. It's the story of an exiled British reported living in Italy, building his life again after escaping from an England ruled by a dictatorship. His life in Italy comes to an end, however, after the British government puts pressure on the Italians to repatriate all exiles. Once back in Britain the protagonist goes through various hardships and prison camps before...no, I won't spoil the book by revealing the ending.
