State Of Fear - Michael Crichton ... his most gripping and entertaining book yet In Paris, a physicist dies after performing a laboratory experiment for a beautiful visitor. In the jungles of Malaysia, a mysterious buyer purchases deadly cavitation technology, built to his specifications. In Vancouver, a small research submarine is leased for use in the waters of New Guinea. And in Tokyo, an intelligence agent tries to understand what it all means. Thus begins Michael Crichton's exciting and provocative techno-thriller State of Fear. Only Crichton's unique ability to blend scientific fact with pulse-pounding fiction could bring such disparate elements to a heart-stopping conclusion. This is Crichton's most wide-ranging thriller. State of Fear takes the reader from the glaciers of Iceland to the volcanoes of Antarctica, from the Arizona desert to the deadly jungles of the Solomon Islands, from the streets of Paris to the beaches of Los Angeles. The novel races forward on a roller-coaster thrill ride, all the while keeping the brain in high gear. Gripping and thought-provoking, State of Fear is Michael Crichton at his best.

... different locations and introducing regular cliff-hangers to keep the suspense up. It looks like an epic book when you pick it up, and the scope of the plot makes it feel like one too. One of my main problems with Crichton's books is that he's not terribly good at writing characters. They tend to be very predictable and fairly one-dimensional. Whilst the characters in State of Fear are never going to win any awards, they are a little more rounded than his usual efforts. Fun, human and realistic, they help drive the ...more

Crowned Review State Of Fear - Michael Crichton: Look at the state we're in (953 words)

I've never really got on with Michael Crichton books. The trouble I've always found is that, although he comes up with some good ideas (even if they are all essentially a spin on the theme "when technology goes bad), he doesn't have a particularly engaging writing style. Despite this, I do eventually get round to reading them (although I would never go out and buy one full price) and found this one cheap in a charity shop. Picking up State of Fear is enough to induce the titular feeling in you. It's an absolute doorstop of a book - the paperback coming in at well over 600 pages, complete with two appendices and an extensive bibliography of complex-looking ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review State Of Fear - Michael Crichton (879 words)

I'm a big Micheal Crichton fan. I've read all his Jurassic Park novels, unwittingly watched movies based on his books and loved ER which I didn't realise until recently he was responsible for. So before I tell you what I think about State of Fear, I'll quickly talk about the premise of the book. The book is essentially about a group of eco-terrorists that go around deliberately causing climate related disasters around the globe in the hopes that this will heighten fear and raise awareness about global warming. Against them is a chap called Dr Richard Kenner who is a Professor Geoenvironmental Engineering at MIT along with some odd associates that he ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review State Of Fear - Michael Crichton: A Brilliant Book - That's Good Coming From Me! (460 words)

Before i start, i'll just say...I don't like reading books, and i'm a double English student, but i only read when i have to normally, for school obviously (even then i didn't finish all the books i was supposed to), but i finisihed this one and actually enjoyed it. Now read on. State of Fear is a novel by renouned author Michael Crichton. In this novel he tackles the subject of the environment, specifically global warming. This is one of Crichton's longest novels, possibly because it features a much larger cast of main players than his previous work. In places it can seem a little muddled and confusing but all in all another great novel. The book ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A book that changed my outlook on life (239 words)

This was the first Michael Crichton book that I've read having been recommended many of his titles. It was a book that I was particularly interested in reading as I have a deep care for the environment and am an amateur scientist so I was looking forward to reading this book. The book had a strange start in which I found it hard to keep track of who was who and what the point of the constant flitting around the globe was but after about the first 30-50 pages things started to settle down and once I was in the plot I literally couldn't put it down. For me, the strength of the book is not so much the plot (although this is good but a bit James Bondish and ...  Read the complete review
