Advantages: Wonderful story, great illustrations.

Disadvantages: None

Having enjoyed several books by Julia Donaldson in the past my sons and I were very excited when they recieved Stick Man as a gift for their third birthday. This book sees the popular author team up with the illustrator Axel Schefler once again, the winning team that created classics such as The Gruffalo, Room on the Broom, A Squash and a Squeeze and The Snail and the Whale.

This book tells the story of Stick Man, who lives happily in the family tree with his wife and children until one day tragedy strikes and whilst out for a jog he is picked up and carried off by a dog. As the story unfolds Stick Man tries his best to get home but is thwarted at every turn- he ends up being used as a Pooh-stick, on top of a sand castle, being used as a sword, as a bat and a bow, as no-one realises that he is not just any old stick, but is in fact Stick Man. As the line repeated throughout the book goes 'Im not a stick! Why can't you see, I'm Stick Man, I'm Stick Man, I'M STICK MAN, thats me'. We see the seasons change as Stick Man continues his travels, until just as it looks like Stick Man might meet a sticky end, he is rescued by someone quite unexpected.

Stick Man is written using the lovely rhyming text characteristic of all Julia Donaldson books, and as ever, Axel Schefflers illustrations bring the story to life for young children with their wonderful detail. This book has been a great hit in our house, and is especially recommended at the moment as we are in the run up to Christmas due to its festive ending. It is a perfect length for a bedtime story, and a joy for parents to read, not always the case with children's books! If you have been a fan of other Julia Donaldson books, you will not be dissapointed!

Stick Man is published by Alison Green books, and available on Amazon for £2.99.

Summary: Thoroughly recommended
