Advantages: Good tactile book.
Disadvantages: Grime and Slime posible after your child mouths Henry
Stroke Henry I say to the little girl with a visual impairment as I read the book stroke Henry to her. I read the words and pass the book to the chid her little hands feel the soft furry area that is on the picture of Henry. This book is a story about Henry a playful dog who gets up to mischief he plays with the children’s toys on one page he tugs at washing and tries to squeeze through the fence through the fence. I enjoy reading this book and my pupil loves to feel the different textures. There are rough textures smooth textures in this book for my student to feel as I tell the story I think this is a good addition to a tactile library.
Not only is this book suitable for a child with visual impairments but it is also good for tinies. My Grandchild ages 1 year old loves this book. The textured fabrics that she touches as nana tells her the story helps her understanding. I use the words rough smooth hard soft giving her a descriptive language to describe the fabrics. The words in this book are simple and only a few each page, if you wish you can elaborate on the story yourself.
This is a book your child will pick up and look at themselves. Do be warned though as at the age /stage this book is aimed at will put slime and grime on the pages so not ideal for sharing with a large group of children unless you have some control over keeping the book away from mouths.
This book was written by Rod Campbell who has written many other children’s books including DEAR ZOO and books that contain the character Buster. Several of his books are touchy feely books which are very good.
This book is a strong board book that will withstand some chewing it is published by Pan Macmillan 1995. ISBN-13: 9781852922672 ISBN: 1852922672 RRP £ 4.99 but can be bought cheaper.
http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/book/1852922672/ isbn has it for 3.74p Amazon is selling it new for £4,99p lots of second hand ones available too.
