Advantages: Well written

Disadvantages: A bit too one-sided?

My first impression of this book was that the Nexus Classics imprint had had a make-over, and that they’d commissioned the extremely talented Lynn Paula Russell to do a cover. In point of fact this isn’t a Nexus book at all, though the livery is close enough to fool the casual observer. However the name Sarah Veitch should be known to most Nexus readers, especially given the recent batch of Classics which have been re-issued. To the uninitiated Ms Veitch specialises in CP (corporal punishment) fiction, with females on the receiving end of all manner of stern, but erotic, punishments. In addition to the Nexus novels and short story collections, she is also a regular in magazines like Kane, Februs, Forum and Desire.

Subculture is also the launch title for a new CP press called Palmprint. The story involves a private Health Clinic in Malta, run by the enigmatic Dr Landers and his team of young, female staff. Arriving to work with Dr Landers is Lisa, the archetypal innocent abroad. What she discovers is that Dr Landers, a self-confessed disciplinarian, has no compunction in putting her across his lap… Here’s an extract:

'Glad to hear it,' Michael said, 'The rest of the staff are just beginning to enjoy your squirming.' He watched the colour spread over the back of her neck and knew that her face was a similar shame-filled shade. 'Time I put that nice plump cushion under your belly,' he added softly, 'So that your bum sticks even more fully out.' He picked up the satin-clad square, 'After all, an arse that's being punished should be a fully raised target. And we want the owner of that bottom to know that she can't escape.'

Of course the story sounds familiar, much CP writing involves variations on a theme. Whether you go for it or not depends largely on whether spanking and CP are your thing or not. Palmprint are unashamedly targeting the CP aficionado, and with Sarah Veitc
h kicking things off they can hardly go wrong
