Advantages: Exciting story

Disadvantages: Part of a trilogy, you should read all three

A cracking well told story The Subtle Knife is one of the best and imaginative books that I have read, And I have read hundreds. I recently only started reading children's adventures and some of them are better than the adult alliterative. Books like the Harry Potter series and His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman are some of these books, The Subtle Knife is the second book from His Dark Materials, I have not read the first yet as I could not get hold of it but I don't think you need to read it first.

Will Parry is a 12 year old boy living a life with no friends, no father and a mother who is scared of something he does not understand. Soon he has to leave his mom with his piano teacher because he is afraid she will be taken away, and while back at home he accidentally kills a strange man who breaks in the house. Will makes a run for it and while on the streets he sees a cat walk through a strange window in the air, A window to alternative worlds and a dangerous destiny. A destiny that sees him meet is father and lots of strange people, Friend and Foe.

In these worlds he meets a girl called Lyra whom becomes his friend and who also is part of his destiny. A girl with problems of her own from a different world. In these new world's they meet Witch's who help them, Angel's who join them and spectres who try to kill them by eating the soul's of adults. All of them are embroiled in one great war, A war for Heaven. And a destiny that sees Will become the bearer of the Subtle Knife, a knife that can cut the air itself which opens the windows to the new world's.

This book is well worth a read, I couldn't put it down. I hope they make this into a film like Harry Potter it would be good. And you'll soon be reading the next book in the series "The Amber Spyglass"
