Sucking Sherbert Lemons is a amusing book who lead character is one of lifes victims anda rather pompous character who is struggling with his sexuality and in particular his homosexual tendencies which clashes with his Catholic faith. Benson is a 14 year old boy who attends a Catholic school and his reliion is very important to him in the sort of single minded zealousness that you get with the younger generation where everything is very much in black and white when it comes to right and wrong. Sucking Sherbet Lemons was the first published novel for writer Michael Carson. Carson is a Liverpool lad born just after the end of WW2 and was educated in a number of Catholic schools before becoming a novice in a religious order. He has also taught English before taking up a career as a writer. In his first novel Carson has produced a very amusing and enjoyable look at homosexuality and the Catholic faith, and in particular the concept of Catholic guilt.
