Red Dog - Louis De Bernieres

Rating:
Red Dog is a lesser known book by Louis De Bernieres, who wrote the famous ‘Captain Corelli’s Mandolin’ which was turned into a film. I first saw the book Red Dog towards the end of 2002, which made it perfect as a birthday present for me! As my big day is in December, I have to wait all year for all my presents (boo) but in this instance I was happy to put it on my wish list! Plus the fact it was £5.99 for a very slim book made me want to receive it rather than buy it! OK, yes I’m a meanie! We hear too, about the land he inhabited and the people he knew. Some of the stories are funny. Some of the stories feel like a little slice of social history. Some of the stories are sad. Binding them together, making ...
Louis De Bernieres in general

Rating:
This novel - the fourth by Louis De Bernieres - is wonderful. Set in 1941, it tells of the war-time occupation of the Greek island of Cephalonia by the Italians and then subsequently the Germans. The early chapters describe an idyllic life on a beautiful island in the Ionian Sea and are full of humour with their accounts of the local characters. The mood turns to bleakness with the ignominious Italian invasion of Greece, the brave and determined fightback by the Greeks who would have routed their attackers had Hitler not saved Mussolini s face by a German invasion. The humour returns in the form of Captain Antonio Corelli, a young Italian officer posted to ...
