I was lent this book by a friend and now Lesley Lokko is actually on of my favourite authors! Her books will certainly get mistakened for chick lit but they really are so much more than that! Sundowners is an amazing book and takes you through the lives of four teenage girls. I think the thing that this book made me realise was that I have more whole life ahead of me. I think these girls are about 15 in the beginning of the book and I was that age when I read it and seriously the amount of years that went past and their lives were still rapidly developing made me realise that 15 really isn't old! Like many good Dooyoo addicts, I find myself trying products I wouldn't normally have been interested in after reading a review which sparked my interest. A while back, when I first started getting Amazon vouchers, I bought a book on a whim which, despite usually steering well clear from chick lit of any kind, I thought sounded pretty interesting. I started to read this book without any real expectations. But once I started to get to know the characters, I found that I couldn't put it down and Lesley Lokko has fast become one of my favourie authors - I read all of her new releases with the same enthusiam I read this with. Not only does it deal with politics, culture and history (especially with regards to apartheid in South Africa and the situation in Palestine which is mentioned briefly), but it combines this with characters who I felt I could really identify with.
