My five year old started primary school in September and as part of his learning programme we are involved in a process of "Shared Reading", basically this involves the adult and the child enjoying books together. The children are also encouraged to join the local library and they learn to read through the phonics system. Basically they learn through sound pictures and sounding out words, initially concentration is on understanding the stories through the pictures rather than through the words, this is where the shared reading is essential.
