In his introduction to this dark and thoughtful issue, Brian Azzarello describes how honoured and excited he was to be asked to write Superman. Having been an author of Batman Hush before, he had involved Superman when the two characters met up, albeit in rather violent circumstances. Now, however, with the pressure on to create a dark and moved and guilt-ridden Superman, Azzarello manages to give us a very morbid and morose feel to the proceedings, with the superhero feeling very down after the events of the previous episodes.
