Advantages: Thorough and suited to everyone , well written & can be amusing
Disadvantages: Prices in listings tend to be wrong
The version of this book I have is the Sydney and NSW (current edition), I bought the book when in Australia. The book follows the same format as other lonely planets with sections dedicated to the basics, travel, accommodation, food, sleeping, culture & history.
The basics and travel section in this book are fantastic and save you loads of money getting around because it gives you the chance to get around while avoiding a taxi, essential for budget travellers.
The accommodation section covers a wide range of places from no frills hostels to luxury hotels such as the Hilton providing enough choice for any traveller. It is similar with food section with it covering food for all budgets and tastes.
Further to this it also has sections for entertainment throughout the city which can be very useful as there is so much to choose from and sometimes it is difficult to know where to start. The guidebook list the activities in different areas of the city and also provides prices for admission etc. Also the book covers all the festivals and events that happen in the city, (I was there for Mardi Grais and throughly recommend it, there was a very good atmosphere).
The Lonely Planet to Sydney is a very through book and is suitable for everyone no matter your age, budget, tastes or reason for visiting Sydney. The only thing worth noting is that the prices in the book seem to be quoted lower than the actual price at almost you the listings which can be very frustrating!
Summary: Essential book for anyone travelling to Sydney
