Tanglewreck is Jeanette Winterson's first novel for children. The eleven year old heroine, Silver, lives with her aunt Mrs Rockabye in the 500 hundred year old family home, Tanglewreck. Mrs Rockabye has been her legal guardian since the disappearance of Silver's parents in a railway accident four years previously. There are shades of Harry Potter here, as Silver has to live on soup made from nettles, dandelions and cabbage, while her aunt eats fish and chips and family sized slabs of chocolate. Even her aunt's rabbit, Bigamist, gets fresh carrots and lettuce. He is no ordinary rabbit however, but a spy, who keeps an eye on Silver for her ... Read the complete review
