Advantages: Lovely thick book that you can't put down

Disadvantages: Heavy to carry around

I thought I’d gone off Maeve Binchy – I usually prefer science fiction and fantasy. However, I picked up this book in the library and took it home for want of something more interesting. And it gripped me! I couldn’t put it down for the 3 days it took me to read from cover to cover. The characters are totally believable – you want to give them a shake sometimes, but that’s how people are!

The story concerns Ria, who meets and marries her dream man at a young age. They build up a wonderful home together and have a couple of children, and Ria’s life centres on her home, family and friends. Meanwhile, husband Danny is pursuing a slightly dodgy career, influenced by his mentor Barney. Of course, it can’t last, and indeed it doesn’t. Ria shows herself to be much the stronger character, and arranges a house swap with a stranger from America. The swap turns out to change many lives – but enough said, read it yourself and let the Binchy magic sweep you along.

I do think that this is a women’s read – I’d love to know if any men enjoy this kind of story. And why shouldn’t they?
