I have been programming computers in various forms since I was eight years old when I used to bash out crappy games for the Sinclair Spectrum. These days I program for more serious reasons (most of the time) – but I am far from being a professional programmer. As a student physicist, I spend a great deal of time solving problems through computer programming. Although my code usually works if a ‘proper’ programmer took a look at it – he/she would probably say something along the lines of ‘ugh!’. So I thought that it was about time I learnt how to do things properly – give up the ancient Fortran programming language ...
