Advantages: Easy to read, extremely helpful

Disadvantages: None

I am currently doing a short counselling course with the Open University and we were provided with one book which is pretty big but severely intense. Reading it was a great task and i have to say i found it very difficult to read and understand. Well thankfully another student on the course suggested a book that she had found extremely helpful. This was Teach Yourself Counselling by Aileen Milne. So i ordered the book from Amazon which i got for £6.50 and it arrived just in time as i had my first assignment due less than a week later.

This book is so easy to read it makes you wonder why books like this aren't the ones used by colleges and unversities. Aileen Milne is actually a qualified counsellor and runs her own private practice so its a book that is clearly giving you the right information.

The aim of the book is a practical introduction to the world of Counselling, it looks at the 3 main approaches to counselling and discusses alot about counselling skills. Its a good book for anyone interested in counselling, interested in training as a counsellor and it helps people understand how counselling skills my benefit a person in the workplace or in any personal relationships they may encounter.

The content is mainly:

Understanding what counselling involves
Learn the basic principles and skills
Get the information to make informed choices

Each of the 12 chapters is broken down into easy to read paragraphs with plenty of examples to further your understanding. The 3 main approaches that are addressed are Cognitive-behavioural, Person-centred & Psychodynamics. Each section on the main approaches are simplistically written and in plenty of detail and once you've finished reading things are much clearer.

There is lots of good information in this book and the book is recommended by author and broadcaster Phillip Hodson who says that it fills a vital gap in the literature on counselling and is glad that it has been published

I was originally only going to use this book to dip in and out of during my course but i found myself sat in the garden on a uncommonly sunny day reading the whole thing. My awareness of counselling now is much better and it made my essay much easier to get to grips with.

I'm not saying this book will turn you into a counsellor overnight but it will give an idea on the basic skills needed and may help people who are thinking about a career in counselling make an informed choice.

There are over 300 titles in the Teach Yourself range and can be found at www.teachyourself.co.uk.

Definitely worth buying, it broke counselling down into a much easier subject to learn.

Summary: Great book if i do say so myself

I think this would be a great addition to an actual accademic course. I did consider counselling myself a few years ago. Excellent review anyway x
