Advantages: Very easy to follow and will get you to a good level

Disadvantages: Dull dialogue

I've been learning Russian on and off for about 5 years and always keep this book handy. It's part of the "Teach Yourself" range and whilst the situations used for dialogue are hardly rivoting, I found that the book is quite easy to follow and the way they teach you is rather well thought out, there are useful lessons at the beginning on the alphabet and handwriting, the minute you learn this then your newly learnt skill is put into practice and that's what I like about this book, the way it revises immediately what you've learnt and has a way of putting everything together in a way that makes it easy to remember.

To add to that, it gets you up to a really reasonable level unlike a lot of books that will leave you with a very basic level of the language. After this book, comes a more advanced level which fits in where this one finishes. Have to buy that come to think of it! Why do all these language books want to talk about cats?
