Advantages: Bright, Fun, Good for Learning Numbers
Disadvantages: Pop-Up Tears Easily
Ten Wriggly Wiggly Caterpillars is one of the nicest children's books our grandson had when he was younger. He still likes it now but I think it's best suited to children aged one to three years old, as it's a good learning aid for helping them to learn to count to ten. Slightly older children will still enjoy this book every now and again, but they won't get the same educational benefit from it that very young children will.
This book is a large hardback book that's got ten little enamel or plastic caterpillars embedded in it. As you turn each page, you lose a caterpillar. The story is in rhyme and it progresses through counting the caterpillars backwards from ten to one. Each little caterpillar has a different reason for wandering off on its page, for example it's staying to munch some tasty leaves. The number of the caterpillars on the page is shown in a nice big numerical format in the corner of each page too which is helpful for little ones learning to recognise their numbers.
At the end of the story, there is one little caterpillar all on his own, then you turn the page to get greeted by a lovely, bright pop-up scene of ten butterflies. This is really attractive to little eyes and I liked that I could sort of flap the book backwards and forwards to make it look like the butterflies were flying out of the book. Unfortunately, the downside to this pop-up bit is that it's very easy for little hands to tear. Especially little hands who are trying to "catch" the butterflies as they appear to fly out of the book (bad grandson).
It is a lovely book for any youngster though and especially those who are getting to grips with their first numbers. It costs £5.99 from Amazon and I've also seen it in our local Tesco for £4.99 so it's worth looking around for a good price.
Summary: Highly Recommended
