Set mainly in 1920s France, 'Tender is the night' contrasts the utopian Riviera with the broken psychology of the materialistic rich, who have been corrupted by money and power. Anybody whose read 'A moveable feast' by Hemingway, will have some idea of Fitzgerald's wife Zelda Sayre, who finished life in an asyllum, whilst her husband headed further towards alcholism. The characters of Dick and Nicole are loosely autobiographical, although in contrast Nicole build up strenght as Dick becomes a drunkard. Tender is the night is a romantic but slightly disturbing novel that apparently closely mirrors F. Scott Fitzgerald's own life. The story is based around the Diver family - Dick is a psychologist (or tries to be when there aren't more interesting things on his mind) who has married a rich patient of his and is trapped by his dependence on her wealth. The Divers enjoy a rich life on the french riviera and meet many exciting friends and famous people. Unfortunately, Dick falls in love with ... Read the complete review
