Advantages: Fluffy Good Fun
Disadvantages: None
Our grandson has had the Usborne touchy-feely series "That's Not My" by Fiona Watts since he was a year old. He's four now and he still really likes these books even now. The books start out as a good introduction to books and then become useful in teaching little ones descriptive terms as they grow older. Also, these are all board books so they're suitable from a few months of age.
That's Not My Dragon is written by Fiona Watts with the illustrations by Rachel Wells. The book retails at £4.99 though Amazon is currently selling it for £2.99 which is excellent value for money. You can often get it as part of a 3 for 2 deal at places like Waterstones too.
This book was particularly popular with the grandson when he was younger but now he is four he doesn't really like this one as he thinks it's a bit cutesy. That's because of all the cute dragons and the sweet fluffy bits I think! The front cover is of a big purple dragon with furry ears for starters. It's an absolutely lovely book for younger girls and boys though (and older ones who aren't such tough nuts too).
Each page features the line "That's not my dragon... Its something is too something". So for example, one page says "That's not my dragon... its spots are too squashy" and the picture shows a dragon with squashy purple spots that little hands can feel to ascertain what squashy feels like.
This book has a lot more to it than some of the other books in this range in that they use a lot of furry and sparkly bits in this one. In other books in the series, they restrict themselves to flatter, cheaper touchy-feely bits. I reckon that if you're looking to start a youngster on this series, this is a sure-fire hit to start with and one of the best in the series.
Just to point out also that the book we have is dark blue with a purple dragon on the front but Amazon now show a turquoise book with an orange dragon on the front. It's the same book, just in different colours.
Summary: Highly Recommended.

- 03/02/09 We have 'That's not my teddy' - another book in the series. Daughter loves it and 'Ted - dy' is one of her early words. |
