Advantages: Teaches children about different textures

Disadvantages: None

How many times has your young child lost a favourite toy and you've spent ages looking for it?

***The Background***

Usborne are well known for their fantastic range of children's books. From the youngest of toddlers to the more advanced reader they have something for everyone.

This book is written by Fiona Watts and illustrated by Rachel Wells and is one in a large series of books that are simple to read and lovely to look at. Each one features a different type of toy and throughout the book there are lots of touchy feely bits that show differentials between each one that is on show.

***The Story***

The story on this book starts on the front cover,

"That's Not My Monster..."

Shown below is a green monster with a padded fabric nose. Below the picture are the words,

"its nose is too bobbly."

Though the book there are lots of different coloured monsters but each one has a feature that means it is not quite the right one. A stripy monster's spikes are too fuzzy and a green spotty monster has horns, which are just too rough.

On the last set of pages we find a silly looking blue and green monster with bendy arms and we know this is the right one because...

"Its ears are so fluffy."

***The Illustrations***

The illustrations are set on brightly coloured background and the areas used to differentiate the monsters are made up of a variety of textures. These vary from fluffy bits to shiny scaly bits.

***My Thoughts***

Although my son is five now, he still enjoys this series of board books and I think it's mainly because of the textured areas throughout the book. The colours are very eye-catching and the simple format on each of the pages means that he can follow the story well by himself.

He's also just starting to be able to read by himself since starting school in the summer and this book has simple dialogue so he is able to do this for himself with only a little bit of help. The fact that it is easy to memorize helps too and he recognises words like monster now without having to sound them all out.

Most of all though, this book is quite simply, good fun for young children. The funny illustrations and bright colours are very eye catching and all kids seem to love these touchy feely bits. As board books go, I have to say that I'm very impressed with this series. The pages are very thick and easy to wipe clean although I'm sure the fabric sections will get a little bit worn over time.

The reason I like them is that they show children that it's not the end of the world if they can't find their favourite toy first time round and that with a bit of perseverance it will turn up in the end. I've lost track of the times when my son has mislaid a certain toy and we've spent hours hunting for it. The delight on his face when we've found it makes it all worthwhile.

If you have a young child and you're considering getting some board books then I would urge to seriously think about one from this series. There are a number of titles that are appropriate for girls and boys.
