That's Not My......Monster by Fiona Watts - illustrations by Rachel Wells
Jack is only nine months old but he has enough books already to fill a small bedroom on their own. We were recently given another pile of books from a colleague of mine from work. They were all fantastic board books in great condition. This book was in the pile she gave me and I can honestly say Jack loves it.
>> History >>
Usborne, who are the company that publishes this book, is a company that was founded by Peter Usborne in 1973 and they specialise in books that are bright, entertaining and friendly. They do a lot of books for babies and toddlers and these are all very successful.
>> Price and Look >>
The RRP of this book is £4.99 pence but they can be bought in new condition from Amazon for a little less at £4.49 pence. There are tons available from places such as eBay where you can always find a bargain.
The look of the book itself is pretty much perfect and even though this particular book I have is a second hand copy it is still in immaculate condition. Because the book is a board book I find these types of books to be very heard wearing and can usually withstand a lot of abuse.
The cover of the book is bright and appealing with a purple background and in the forefront a picture of a green monster. The monsters nose is made from a bobble kind of material and this allows the reader to feel the nose and experience the different sensation with the different texture. The book looks great and makes you just want to read it.
>> The Book Itself >>
On reading this book to Jack I find it very easy as there are very few words to actually read out to him. The story is very simple but great for small children as it is easy to follow and very easy to keep their attention. The story is basically of a small mouse who is trying to find his monster. Through out the book there are all sorts of different monsters but none of them is quite right. On the front cover is where the story begins.... "That's not my monster...his nose is too bobbly". It them continues with different things about each monster not being right, from a monster with horns that are too rough to one where the spikes are too fuzzy. Each different aspect of the monster that is not quite right is made out of a different type of material. This material is easy to touch and feel and really gets Jack's interest.
The final pages of the book show a huge monster with fabulous fluffy ears and at last the mouse says "Now that is my monster...his ears are all fluffy!". The last page I have to say is both mine and Jack's favourite as the ears are large and fluffy and the monster is so bright and colourful. Jack just doesn't want to put this book down.
Every page is bright and colourful and with a different texture on each page it gives a little something extra to intrigue a young child such as Jack. As I have said before the story is basic but that is how it needs to be. Jack is just amazed by all the different textures he is able to feel.
>> Conclusion >>
This book is one from a series of books all along the same lines such as, That's not my Tractor, or That's not my Train. All of these books have the same touchy feely aspect to them and I personally think they are great. Jacks loves the fact that he is more involved with the book than say if I were just reading out loud to him and he was looking at all the pictures. The idea itself I think is brilliant and I would certainly recommend them to all parents of young children. I think they books are aimed at very young children and someone of maybe 18 months to two years would not be so interested in them as Jack was at his 9 months of age.
The books are so much fun to read with Jack and they are illustrated brilliantly. The colours and the textures I feel are enough to hold Jack's attention for a long time. I do think he is going to be a little book worm just like his mum!!!
