Advantages: touching

Disadvantages: short

Since the Pirates of the Caribbean series of films, pirates have seen a resurgance in popularity again, and they've now made their way into the that's not my range.

We have this book, and I feel a bit awkward explaining how pirates really make a living to my son (only joking). But really, isn't it an odd topic? Or is it just me?

The box presents you with six pirates, all of which don't belong to the narrator, because they have some distinguishing characteristic that identifies them as not his. For example 'his scarf is too rough'. Each pirate also has a touch and feel part to them (so the scarf is made of sand-paper like material). It's a book that encourages touching and feeling different textures, and has a sensory appeal to it over the somewhat limited language.

As always, the pics are bright and colourful, and exhibit a peaceful sketchy quality to them that is not a million miles away from what a child would draw themselves.

At only ten pages, it's a short book, and you may fail to see how it could warrant the £5.99 price tag, but I personally find that my two year old son loves them (and has done for the year or so he's had a lot of the series)>

If you liked it, try some of the others in the series, such as teddy, monster and kitten.

Summary: do it

This is a great series of books and considering their resilience to repeated toddler handling, not really bad value for money.

Love the colour and simplicity of the pictures.

These sensory books play a vital role in a child's brain development. My son had a stroke while I was still preganant with him, and these books helped stimulate his brain to reapir old ,and even create new, neural pathways. Apparently they reinforce the part of the brain that recognises the surroundings and processes the sensory data needed to interact with our surroundings. Having said that, I admit I checked most of them out of the library and got from sales, as £5.99 is a bit pricey when buying lots of little books they will outgrow all too soon!
