Advantages: Good crime thriller
Disadvantages: Nothing really new
Diana Duprey is the town's abortionist. She is good at her job and she serves a purpose. However, like everything controversial she has her enemies and lots of them. Her husband Frank is the local District Attorney and their marriage is cracking at the edges, with frequent fights and an infidelity.
Her daughter, Megan is mad at her, even though she has been brought up very liberally and unbeknowst to her, her ex-boyfriend has managed to arrange for pornographic photos of her to end up on the internet.
So, when Diana is found dead by her pool, there are plenty of people the police can look to for clues, evidence and motives. The problem is getting something in the bag.
I got this book from Bookhopper and was intrigued because I had read a few reviews of it a long time ago. It was a good crime thriller and I did enjoy it, but I can't help thinking it got on the Richard & Judy summer read list partly due to it's title. It is a bit sort of "taboo" with the word abortionist, in the title, but the book actually focuses on that element very little. The title draws people in and then they read the book - simple marketing really.
However, all the characters were believable and I did feel a little disappointed when Diana died so early on as I liked her character and wanted to read more of her decisions rather than about her post partem.
Again though, it is a good enjoybale read. There is nothing new here that made me think wow, I have to read more of Hyde's work but it was easy enough to get through in a couple of weeks. No surprises about the perpertrator either and I think that was probably intentional, although you are not told for sure until the end.
Get it in paperback then recycle on to someone else.
Summary: RECOMMENDED xx

- 20/11/08 I must admit that I thought it would be more focused on the name of the title itself rather than a crime/drama book.
Cheers. |
