I recently had to write a detailed essay about Antonin Artaud, an influential theatre practitioner, who tried (and failed) to create a style of performance called "The Theatre of Cruelty." in summary, the "theatre of cruelty" was designed to provide spiritual healing through the medium of theatre. Artaud argued that cruelty was a method for healing, as one emerges renewed and refreshed, having faced ones own cruelties. the "theatre of cruelty" is not about being cruel to the audience.
