The Letters of J.R.R.Tolkien - J.R.R. Tolkien
by bruffyboy - written on 30/01/09 (Very useful, 45 readings)
Rating:
I have been a fan of JRR Tolkien for years and years, and have read a LOT of his books, as well as books about him, but I have to say that this is my favourite of all. After Tolkien's death, noted biographer Humphrey Carpenter, gathered together a huge collection of letters he had written, and published them in this 480 page long book. The letters, all fascinating, fall into the following categories: 1) FAN MAIL One of the most interesting categories, Tolkien answers (often in great detail) questions from fans about his work. This is such an interesting area, as he gives answers untold in any of his other work. For example, he explains how Gandalf is, essentially, ...

The Book Of Lost Tales: Part Two - J. R. R. Tolkien
by CaptainD - written on 08/05/06 (Very useful, 80 readings)
Rating:
*WARNING – if you’re not a Tolkien fan, you may find this review rather hard going! You have been warned….* The Book of Lost Tales 2 is the second of a set of early versions of stories by JRR Tolkien compiled by his son, Christopher. The title is a little misleading as the stories for the most part made their way in a somewhat shortened format into the book The Silmarillion. (In case you’ve never heard of it, this deals with the first and second Ages of Middle Earth – that is, before both The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings.) There are 6 actual stories in The Book of Lost Tales 2, which are as follows: 1/ The Tale of Tinúviel 2/ Turambar and ...

J.R.R. Tolkien in general
by snliew - written on 30/06/00 (Useful, 28 readings)
Rating:
This is truly a classic. Tolkien wrote this book during the 1940-50s. It's sometimes sold as a trilogy but is best read as one. Lord of the Rings continues from the Hobbit. The ring found by Bilbo turned out to be the one ring which belongs to the evil Sauron. This book tells of the tale of hobbits, drawf, elves, wizards and men who ...
