Advantages: This will become as much use as your favourite fork
Disadvantages: One day it will fall apart where you have read it so many times
The Allotment book by A M Clevely is like the abc of growing on an allotment plot. This was top of my Christmas list and i must have been a good boy last year because it appeared under the Christmas tree.
The book ****************
The book covers everything from why get an allotment, how to best clear the plot, making a plan of where to plant things, soil cultivation, what and when to plant, how to care for the plants, guide to what to do, to what throughout the year as well as having details of construction of such things as plant beds and advice on sheds and security.
The author is one of the regular gardeners that contributes articles to Grow Your Own magazine.
My Thoughts ***********
I read this book from cover to cover in the first 2 days i had it. the wealth of knowledge in it is fantastic. Even now i find my self pulling this book off the shelf and dipping in to it for advice and information on plants. The only negative thing i can find to say about the book is that unlike every other book on vegetable growing, it does not give a guide of what you can grow and / or sew, month by month. Instead it just breaks down the seasons in to early winter, late winter, Early spring , late spring, and so on. Which can be a problem as in the UK these times of year can be much earlier for some parts than others.
All the advice given is written in a clear and easy way to understand, so even newcomers to vegetables and allotments like me can understand. There are plenty of diagrams and pictures in the book to help clarify what is being said. This book is not just for the beginner but for the more experienced gardeners amongst us. There is loads of useful advice on everything to do with having an allotment and lots of great tips.
This book should be on any allotment holders bookcase. I know mine is going to get loads of use over the coming years. It really is an enjoyable read. Whether its read curled up in the warm on cold winter nights, or soaking up the sun on the plot with a cold drink as you take a break.
Summary: This needs to be on your bookshelf
