The Amateur Marriage - Anne Tyler ... for each other. The moment she walked into his mother’s grocery store in the Polish neighbourhood of Baltimore, he was smitten. And in the heat of World War II fervour, they were hastily wed. But they never should have married. Pauline, impulsive and impractical, tumbles hit-or-miss through life; Michael, plodding, cautious, and judgemental, proceeds deliberately. In time their foolish quarrels take their toll. A 17-year-old daughter disappears, and some years later this fractious pair is forced to rescue her little boy, named Pagan, from drug-infested San Francisco, to take him home and raise him. From the sound of the cash register in the old grocery to the counterculture jargon of the sixties, from the miniskirts to the multilayered apparel of later years, Anne Tyler captures the evocative nuances of everyday life during these decades with such telling precision that every page brings smiles of recognition. Throughout, as each of the competing voices bears witness, we are drawn ever more deeply into the complex entanglements of family life in this marvellous, multifaceted novel – one of Anne Tyler’s finest.

... it shows that someone can have faults and yet be a perfectly normal human being at the same time. I really liked the way the story was told. Divided into chapters, each chapter skips ahead a few years so that I was anxious to find out what had happened to the family since the last chapter. For example, the first chapter is about Pauline and Michael's wedding, the second is about life with their first child, and the third skips forward to after their third child is born. For me, this made the book very easy to read, ...more

When Pauline and Michael marry during the Second World War, they expect everything to be like roses, but it is soon clear that there are massive cracks in their marriage that can never be covered over. However, after the birth of their three children, it seems that they are prepared to give their marriage a real go. Rating:

The Amateur Marriage By Anne Tyler I recently had my two week holiday in France, staying in a very small village where I knew the evenings could well be long, and I would need a good book to keep me entertained! At work, we have a swapping system, so I looked along the shelf at the books and chose The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler. Anne Tyler is an American author who lives in Baltimore in Maryland, on the north east coast of America. This has set the backdrop to most of her stories. I have only read one other of her novels, The Accidental Tourist, and really enjoyed it. The stories seem to follow the trials of life ...  Read the complete review
