Advantages: Good source of reference for problems

Disadvantages: Over emphasises the problems

The Anxious Parent's Guide to Pregnancy is a not necessarily great at calming your worries or at answering all the questions that neurotic mums to be may have. Having said that, it is an excellent book and full of very informative pieces.

I was leant a copy by a friend. She warned me not to worry too much about the scary bits. I read it cover to cover but over about 8 months. It was too depressing to read for long in one sitting. It did address many of my concerns and even now if there is a problem or something that worries me, I refer to this book because I know it will cover it.

The main downside is that it is American so gives unhelpful advice about changing your consultant if you are not happy with the advice you are given. That is hardly an option on the NHS. In fact, how many pregnant women actually even have a consultant these days? In nearly 9 months I have seen two midwives twice and other than that I have seen a different one every single time. I have been extremely disappointed with the level of care offered in my area and this book has been a great source of support when things have gone wrong, as it does not shy away from answering difficult questions.

Overall it is a great book to refer to when things are worrying you and you cannot get an answer elsewhere. If you are prone to worrying though, reading this cover to cover could make it worse, as it raises many problems that your worried little mind wouldn't have even thought of!

Summary: Not a bad book but avoid if you are a worrier!
