Having a child diagnosed as autistic can come as quite a shock to many parents. It doesn't help that autism is not one single easily identified condition but affects each child differently. Fortunately Lorna Wing has written an account of autism that explains various aspects of the disorder. It's subtitled "A Guide for Parents and Professionals", but in my view this book is mainly for parents. Professionals should already know this stuff. In practice many of them don't, but that's another separate rant. The book is divided into two sections, the first devoted to describing autism and the second to ways of helping.
