Disadvantages: Takes a bit of getting into
Autograph Man is an interesting read, it tells the story of Alex Li Tandem who as a young boy attends a wrestling match and gets hooked into the idea of collecting his heroes autographs however there is also a sad event at the match as his father collapses and dies while Alex is rushing to meet the wrestlers. However his interest blossoms into a passion and ultimately into his career as the story jumps forward 15 years to present day Alex.
This phase of the story introduces Alex the dealer in autographs who also enjoys the occasional drug fuelled weekend of debauchery. The story follows his life and those of his friends, Rubenfine the Rabbi, Adam a grass consuming business man and Joseph who works in insurance. The main focus of the story is Alex obsession with a fadin Hollywood star and the fact that after many years of trying he appears to have fially obtained one of her autographs however there is also the possibility that he has forged it himself while under the influence.
This book is a good read however it is hard going in the early parts of the book, I liked the rather unique characters in the book and certainly it was interesting to find out about autograph collecting and how devious they are.
The characters are well developed and quite different from other books I have read and once I got about a quarter of the way through this book I was hooked even if throughout the story there is this nagging doubt tha things will be all rght in the end due to the distructive nature of Alex personality.
Summary: Good book
