The Best Friends Guide to Pregnancy by Vikki Iovine

Being at the final stages of pregnancy now (oh my god cant believe I am going to have a baby in less than six weeks!) I finally managed to get through to the end of this totally brilliant and amusing book.

At the first stage of pregnancy I was trying to read every bit of literature I could get my hands on and finding out I was pregnant a lot of my Christmas presents ended up being pregnancy and child related, thanks friends and family just what I need! But one of my best friends bought me this particular book, which I am totally appreciative of as I found it laugh out loud funny and full of totally useful information for throughout my pregnancy and beyond.

This book is not that large and coming in at nearly 300 pages I found it easy and enjoyable to read through. The cost of the book says £9.99 pence on the back cover but obviously this was a present so I had to pay nothing. I know you can find this book a lot cheaper second hand and there are a lot of copies around for a lot less, I actually sold my copy on eBay at a fraction of the retail price so it is around for a bit of a bargain if you can find it.

The book basically is written by one woman who has had several kids herself and has many friends who have also gone through pregnancies and suffered all sorts of things. The book is a collection of her experiences together with her friends experiences coming together to give some really helpful information.

The book is planned out from the first trimester to the last and contains information on everything from haemorrhoids to swollen ankles to interfering mother in laws and even where you should stand in the way of maternity leave. Even though the woman who writes this is an American the information is still really valid for women in the UK and she has made exceptions for that and added in and taken out information where necessary.

The book really does have some funny things in it and I found myself on more than one occasion in actual fits of laughter. The author has really tried to come across as your own personal best friend and writes in a language that feels very familiar and friendly. The book is easy to put down and pick up and also read along with another book because each page has a subheading about the section in question. It is therefore even easy to flick through and find a section relating to a subject you are particularly interested in whether it be antenatal visits or lack of bladder control.

I could really go on and on about this book and all the different bits of information that each page holds but that would just take forever and I would really recommend that every pregnant woman should read this book. The fact that compared to most pregnancy books this one is priced at a reasonable amount and that it is written in such an easy format is very appealing. Even if you are not a big reader I would say this is worth a look as you can flick through at your leisure.

I have now moved on and am reading “The Best Friends Guide to the First Year of Motherhood” by the same author and this is proving to be a good book just like the first. I do believe this author has written further books such as “the Best Friends guide to Toddlers” which of course I will be interested in reading after a short period as these two are so good.

So for all those pregnant women out there or indeed friends of newly pregnant women I would suggest buying this book and giving it a good read. It is available in most places such as Waterstone’s book store or as I said before you can find copies all over eBay and such like sites.

Summary: a great book for mums to be
