Advantages: Different perspective, funyy at times, the level of detail in characters

Disadvantages: None

I picked up The Book Thief after recommendation from a friend, having not read 'for leisure' for a long while - and it did not disappoint!

I was intrigued by the narrative by Death, and was curious to how this would unfold. The story is told with sensitivity and dark, wondering humour at us Humans, through his dealings with a young girl. Her bright, good-natured, sensitive character is illustrated through his recounts of her diary, as well as her innocence, anger and growing fear for loved ones as she grows up in Nazi Germany. Her strength of mind captures his heart and ours too and the detail of WW2 is accurate and interesting throughout.

The book takes a different point of view than many 'typical' war books and in doing so creates a range of emotions, and is very moving in moments of compassion shared between family and a struggle against stronger forces.

The back cover doesn't do justice; don't be out off by the narration by Death, as some have - it's a good read!

Summary: A lovely book, written with sensitivity and a great deal of consideration
