Evening Class - Maeve Binchy
by louanna8 - written on 14/06/09 (Very useful, 42 readings)
Rating:
Evening Class by Maeve Binchy is not the sort of book I would normally chose. I prefer gritty, unusual stories with unexpected twists . As it happens the choice of english books in my local library is limited and there weren t any better options(I refuse to read Nora Roberts.) Thus I began "Evening Class" expecting a pretty run of the mill book that if not exactly chick lit was not far off. Evening Class is set around Mountainview school in Dublin, the very school that Aidan Dunne is expecting to become headmaster of. Unfortunately, he suffers a major disappointment as he loses out. To console himself he starts an Italien evening class and recruits the ...

I thought I’d gone off Maeve Binchy – I usually prefer science fiction and fantasy. However, I picked up this book in the library and took it home for want of something more interesting. And it gripped me! I couldn’t put it down for the 3 days it took me to read from cover to cover. The characters are totally believable – you want to give them a shake sometimes, but that’s how people are! The story concerns Ria, who meets and marries her dream man at a young age. They build up a wonderful home together and have a couple of children, and Ria’s life centres on her home, family and friends. Meanwhile, husband Danny is pursuing a ...

and uses Ria's garden for growing his vegetables and Barney McCarthy, Danny's dodgy associate who has been having a long term affair. As is usual with Maeve Binchy all these characters have great depth and interact with each other on a regular basis. They all seem to be living a wonderfully happy life. Then one day, out of the blue, Danny tells Ria that he is leaving her for a slip of a girl that he has got pregnant ! Ria discovers that there are also financial worries that have been kept hidden from her and through a chance phone call from an American woman, she decides to opt for a house exchange. The American, Marilyn, is used to privacy and peace, her ...
